Part of a series called Lives of Great Religious Books, in The Book of Job: A Biography the author analyzes a biblical book which takes on the problem of the ubiquity of suffering in the world. Certainly in our post-Holocaust era, when bloodshed seems almost taken for granted, this book surveys the centrality of a mythical but yet very real man and his friends who try to comfort him. Larrimore, director of the religious studies program at the New School for Liberal Arts, carefully culls the relevant literature surrounding this involved and stirring biblical text. His new book should find a place on the shelves of colleges, universities and seminaries teaching Old Testament/Tanach.
