This win­ning pic­ture book might just start a new Passover tra­di­tion. In Rachel’s fam­i­ly, it is always Great-Uncle Har­ry who leads the seder and hides the afikomen. But this year Rachel asks to do the hid­ing, and cre­ates an Afikomen Scav­enger Hunt for her cousins. She explains that there are six envelopes hid­den all over the house, each con­tain­ing a clue and a puz­zle piece. The six clues cor­re­spond to the six items on the seder plate: ​“Karpas is pars­ley, fresh and green. Find Clue Num­ber Two where green is the scene.” By the time the chil­dren find all the puz­zle pieces and put them togeth­er, Rachel has clev­er­ly arranged for the afikomen to be hid­den back on the seder table. The delight­ful illus­tra­tions are most notable for the expres­sive­ness of the char­ac­ters, whose faces reveal the joy and excite­ment of the hunt. Front mat­ter includes a brief intro­duc­tion to Passover; unfor­tu­nate­ly it does not pro­vide an expla­na­tion of the mean­ing of the afikomen. That said, this book is a per­fect choice for lit­tle ones get­ting rest­less dur­ing the read­ing of the hag­gadah, or as an alter­na­tive activ­i­ty to the tra­di­tion­al hid­ing of the afikomen.
