This winning picture book might just start a new Passover tradition. In Rachel’s family, it is always Great-Uncle Harry who leads the seder and hides the afikomen. But this year Rachel asks to do the hiding, and creates an Afikomen Scavenger Hunt for her cousins. She explains that there are six envelopes hidden all over the house, each containing a clue and a puzzle piece. The six clues correspond to the six items on the seder plate: “Karpas is parsley, fresh and green. Find Clue Number Two where green is the scene.” By the time the children find all the puzzle pieces and put them together, Rachel has cleverly arranged for the afikomen to be hidden back on the seder table. The delightful illustrations are most notable for the expressiveness of the characters, whose faces reveal the joy and excitement of the hunt. Front matter includes a brief introduction to Passover; unfortunately it does not provide an explanation of the meaning of the afikomen. That said, this book is a perfect choice for little ones getting restless during the reading of the haggadah, or as an alternative activity to the traditional hiding of the afikomen.
