No Better Friend is about the incredible bond formed between Judy, an English pointer, and Frank Williams, an RAF technician in a Japanese POW camp during World War II. Judy survived several near-death experiences — the ship she was on twice sunk by enemy fire. Her ability to endure the worst of war and captivity was a beacon for the other prisoners, tasked with building a “death railway” across Sumatra, to find a way to persevere despite the horrific conditions in which they worked. Frank helped keep his dog alive by sharing his limited food and by using an elaborate system of signals to warn her when danger approached. Upon their liberation from the camps, Frank and Judy returned to Britain as national heroes. The faith evinced by man and dog that better days were ahead, no matter how bleak their circumstances, evoked the best traditions of Judaism.
