This volume contains sixteen essays emanating from a conference held at Harvard in 2004. And, as might be guessed from such a Gedenkschrift, the names of the contributors are as weighty as the papers contained within. Halbertal has one in there; so does Haym Soloveitchik, and we round out with a Nadler, a Ravitsky, and a host of others. The topics of the monographs are likewise varied, from detailed examination of Rambam’s family’s influence on Jewish affairs, to philosophical disquisitions on his conception of the soul.
Interestingly, editor Jay M. Harris asks in his foreward why another volume of essays on Maimonides is needed. His answer is simply the normal professorial response, cogitant, ergo scribent—They think, therefore, they write. And, if you write it, it should be published.
Jeff Bogursky reads a lot, writes a little and talks quite a bit. He is a media executive and expert in digital media.
