This slight­ly over­sized album con­tains selec­tions from the pho­to archives of Her­bert Son­nen­feld and his wife Leni. The Son­nen­felds were a hus­band-wife team of pho­to­jour­nal­ists who began their craft in the 1930’s and 1940’s. The pho­tos evoke a long-lost era of Jew­ish his­to­ry: they begin in 1935 and end in 1973. Not sur­pris­ing­ly, the first and last pho­to both take place in Israel: the first show­ing a Halutz (pio­neer) from Ger­many sow­ing wheat in 1935 and the last show­ing a Jerusalem scene from the 1960s. This impor­tant and uplift­ing book cov­ers an impor­tant peri­od of Jew­ish his­to­ry, while also allow­ing view­ers to see the human face of that his­to­ry. Illus.
