This slightly oversized album contains selections from the photo archives of Herbert Sonnenfeld and his wife Leni. The Sonnenfelds were a husband-wife team of photojournalists who began their craft in the 1930’s and 1940’s. The photos evoke a long-lost era of Jewish history: they begin in 1935 and end in 1973. Not surprisingly, the first and last photo both take place in Israel: the first showing a Halutz (pioneer) from Germany sowing wheat in 1935 and the last showing a Jerusalem scene from the 1960s. This important and uplifting book covers an important period of Jewish history, while also allowing viewers to see the human face of that history. Illus.
