Adeno (Danny) Abebe is an Ethiopian Jewish journalist and author. His new book, The Journey Is Not Over Yet, tells the story of his childhood in Ethiopia and his experiences partaking in the first mass emigration from Ethiopia to Israel in 1984. Adeno, his family, and their neighbors walked 800 kilometers to Sudan accompanied by smugglers and Mossad agents and spent a year in camps before a plane finally took them to Israel. Tragically, a third of those who made the treacherous journey died of disease and fatigue along the way. Coming from extreme poverty, upon their arrival in Israel, the Ethiopian Jews, known as Falashas, experienced severe culture shock. Another defining hardship the Ethiopian Jews encountered (and still endure) after their arrival in Israel was the lack of understanding and equality as black Jews in Israel. Today, Adeno uses his platforms to speak and find innovative ways to educate his neighbors about his people. As a journalist, Adeno Abebe uses his newspaper columns to touch on issues in Israeli society dealing with race, immigration, and politics. His work has been noted by some of Israel’s top intellectuals and politicians including President Reuven Rivlin. Adeno is based in Jerusalem with his wife and four children.
