Jo-Anne Berelowitz was born in South Africa dur­ing Apartheid. She left for Cal­i­for­nia in 1977 with her hus­band. She is an art his­to­ri­an with advanced degrees from Stan­ford Uni­ver­si­ty and UCLA. Though she thought she’d put South Africa behind her, she became haunt­ed by mem­o­ries of liv­ing there and by long­ing for a place to call home.
